Friendly feral cat shot by arrow in North Bergen, New Jersey

Friday, January 13, 2017 – North Bergen, New Jersey

* There are photos in this blog that may be upsetting to some people! *

On Thursday morning Kelly Shannon went out to feed a few friendly neighborhood feral cats, just like she always does before work every day. Imagine her horror and surprise when she found one of her favorites, a sweet, gentle male named Sparky, wounded with an arrow.

In fact, the arrow was still protruding from his body, and it was evident that the person who shot Sparky did so while he was facing the shooter. The arrow struck him in the left shoulder area, and the tip exited his left flank, leaving the shaft embedded in his body.

Enlisting the aid of a kind neighbor, Kelly was able to get him in a travel crate and immediately took him to her veterinarian. She remarked to me on the phone this morning while I was gathering facts for this blog, that he remained sweet, gentle, easy to handle and trusting, despite being scared and in pain.

Sparky is currently in the care of The Animal Clinic of Bayonne and we are pleased to report that the arrow did not pierce vital organs and right now his prognosis is fair. Sparky will also be neutered, given all of his vaccinations, and tested for FeLV/FIV while he is recovering from his wounds. Kelly would love to get this sweet boy a home. He deserves to have a loving, forever home after this ordeal.

*** AS OF 1/17/17 THE GOFUNDME IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING DONATIONS! It is still visible for anyone who wishes to view the original post and updates! ***

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up for Sparky’s care, and updates will be posted on the fundraiser, along with bills, so everyone can follow his treatment and recovery. GoFundMe donations will be directed to Kelly’s paypal. All funds will be accounted for in a quick and transparent manner. If Sparky’s financial needs are completely met before reaching “goal” – the fundraiser will be stopped. All funds will be for Sparky’s veterinary care (surgical recovery and standard treatment, including labs, medications and imaging, neutering, vaccinations, diagnostic testing) and efforts to find him a good home.

Hi everybody! So here’s what’s going on with me today! My wounds are healing very nicely, and I am much more calm at the hospital. My blood tests came back NEGATIVE for FeLV/FIV so that’s great news. However, my test came back POSITIVE for Bartonella. I was immediately put on antibiotics for the next 30 days. I will stay at the hospital through the week. Auntie Kelly will come see me and check on me. Hopefully she will get new photos so I can show you how handsome I am. I leave for my Forever Home next Saturday! THANK YOU for all the love! MEOW!

  1. If a rescue is not already commuted, my cat rescue in Jersey City, Companion Animal Trust, will find a home for this baby and we will also help fundraise to pay the vet bill. Can you have someone call me at 201 883 9649 or email carol@companionanimaltrust.org

    Thank you.

  3. We adopted a 9 month old feral from Disneyland….in the end Disneyland took the kitten to the kill shelter after they told us that a vet was checking out the kitten and we could pick him up the next day. They told the shelter that the cat was feral so he was put on the fast track to being put down. My husband spent the next 3 days sitting outside his cage talking to him and trying to touch him. He finally convinced the tech to give him one more chance at ‘being social’. He was…and we were able to bring him home. He was very friendly in the park and when he was put into a bad fearful situation he went into feral mode. This kitty might be doing the same thing. When the trust with someone is established, he will do great. Anyone looking to adopt him shouldn’t give up on him based on his being aggressive when caged and wounded. Sending love and prayers for the kitty.

    • He was generally very friendly prior to being shot, his “aggression” is pain and fear based. He’s in a hospital, strange place and strange people, after being shot with an arrow. I’m certain that in a home environment with an experienced cat owner, he would do fine. Thanks so much for helping a kitten that otherwise would not have had a chance. That’s wonderful.

  4. A feral cat won’t be domesticated. Best bet is to heal him up and let him loose in the backyard. I feed a number of ferals in my backyard. They go inside the house when I am not around, but you can’t touch them.

    • I have four true ferals in my home that transitioned well to indoor life. They are all now fully vetted and indoor only cats. Three are quite “loving” and enjoy being petted. Only one is a bit stand-offish to human touch, but has adjusted well otherwise. I’m OK with that. She is safe, inside, warm, fed and makes no effort to “escape” and even plays with some of my other cats. I’ll take that trade-off with her, I’m fine with her not wanting to be petted.

  5. Can someone pm the general location of where the cat was shot? I live in North Bergen.
All my cats are inside. However, I am concerned that some nut is doing this. I also know some feeders and I think they would like to know. Also there is a North Bergrn Animal Rescue Group on Facebook that would probably appreciate this. I don’t want the exact location for the safety of any other cats still beingfed there but a rough idea would be appreciated. You can either pm me on Facebook or email me. Thank you.
